It pulls the interest-over-time data for each keyword across your window, by default the past 12 months, including each term’s average interest score.

Check Hacker News

When the signal is on, it searches Hacker News for each keyword and keeps the most relevant stories, with points and comment counts attached. If a keyword has no HN match, the Trends data still comes back.

Measure the momentum

It compares recent interest against earlier in the window to compute a growth rate, then classifies each keyword: over +20% is rising, under −20% is declining, anything in between is stable.
